Lots of people search for a timer "with music", usually to give a short break or classroom task a soundtrack. This page does that without any downloads or licences: the sound is made by your browser as the timer runs.

How to use it

  1. The timer is set to 5:00 with Calm tones already selected under More options.
  2. Press Start. You need to press it (or tap the page) so the browser will allow sound.
  3. The background sound plays during the countdown and fades out at the end, then the alarm rings.
  4. Use the Ambient volume slider to set the background level and the Volume slider for the alarm.

Where it helps

  • Class tidy-up or silent work. A calm background sound can make a quiet task feel less awkward. The classroom timer has the shrinking disk as well.
  • Breaks. Sit away from your desk for five minutes with the sound on and the screen in full screen.
  • Short relaxation or breathing. There are no instructions here, just a quiet timer. See the meditation timer.
  • Kids' activities. A visible countdown with a gentle sound for drawing, reading or quiet time.

Limits to be aware of

  • Phones may stop audio when the screen locks or when you switch apps. Keep the page open and in front.
  • On iPhones and iPads, the side silent switch can mute web audio. If you hear nothing, check it, then press Test sound.
  • Some school and work computers block sound. Test before you need it.

Other lengths: 10 minute timer with ambient sound, plain 5 minute timer.

What the sounds are

OptionWhat you hearGood for
Calm tonesSoft, slow notes from a fixed scale over a low hum, with an echo. Random, so it never repeats exactlyBreaks, tidy-up time, quiet work
Soft rainFiltered noise that sounds like steady rainMasking background chatter
Brown noiseDeep, low-frequency noise, like a distant rumbleReading, writing
OffSilence until the alarmWhen you have your own playlist

This is generated sound, not recorded songs. We do not claim any benefit from it beyond making a countdown pleasant to sit through. If you want specific songs, start them in your music app and run this timer next to it.

Common questions

Is this real music?

No. It is generated sound: slow random notes, rain-like noise or brown noise. It is not a recorded song.

Why no songs?

Playing recorded music needs licences. Generated sounds avoid that and keep the page light. You can run your own music app alongside the timer.

Does the music stop when time is up?

Yes, it fades out and the alarm sounds.

Why can I not hear the sound on my iPhone?

Tap Start so the browser allows audio, turn the volume up and check the side silent switch.

Can I change how loud the background is?

Yes. Use the Ambient volume slider under More options.

Can I use another length?

Yes. Change the time boxes, or open the 10 minute version.

Does it work offline?

Once the page has loaded it works without a connection.
