An hour is the most natural long time-box: a class, a call, a work block, a workout, or the time left before you have to leave.

Why a timer helps with an hour

Long stretches of time hide drift. It is easy to feel that you have plenty left and then discover with ten minutes to go that you have barely started the important part. A visible countdown, with warnings at ten and five minutes, brings the end into view early enough to adjust.

Typical uses

  • Focus blocks. Sixty minutes on one project. Choose the task, silence notifications and set the timer. When it rings, take a proper break.
  • Meetings and calls. An hour is the default slot in many diaries. Showing the time on a shared screen prompts people to prioritise.
  • Lessons, tutoring and workshops. Add a label such as "Maths revision" and the timer shows it above the digits.
  • Exercise. A long walk, a class at home or a bike ride. Use a bell every 15 or 20 minutes to check your pace and drink. Look after yourself and stop if unwell.
  • Waiting. Rising dough, slow cooking, a delivery window. For anything involving food safety or equipment that could cause harm if left, use a dedicated timer as well.
  • Gaming and screen time. A shared countdown that ends with an agreed alarm avoids negotiation about "one more game".

Reliability for long timers

A one hour countdown is more exposed to phones locking and laptops sleeping than a five minute one. On this page the timer runs against the real clock, so it will show the right time even if the page was briefly stalled. It also requests a screen wake lock (if your browser supports it) so the display stays on. Neither can survive a device that has actually gone to sleep, so charge the device, keep the tab open and tap Test sound before you rely on it.

Other lengths: 45 minutes, 30 minutes, exam timer for longer papers.

Common questions

How many minutes and seconds are in 1 hour?

60 minutes, which is 3,600 seconds.

Can I set a timer for more than an hour?

Yes. Type hours in the HOURS box, up to 99.

Will my screen stay on for the whole hour?

The page asks the browser for a screen wake lock while the timer runs, in browsers that support it. Some devices ignore it on low battery.

What do the warnings do?

At 10 minutes left the timer turns amber and shows a message; at 5 minutes left it turns red. The alarm sounds at zero.

Can I get a bell every 15 minutes?

Yes, set Bell every to 15 under More options, or use the link on this page.

Is it as accurate as a kitchen timer?

It follows your device clock and is accurate to a fraction of a second while the page runs. It cannot run when the device is asleep.

Do I need to keep the tab open?

Yes. Closing the tab or browser ends the timer.
